Extractions

Always a last resort — but when a tooth truly has to go, we make it quick, comfortable, and drama-free.

When an Extraction Is the Right Call

  • Severe decay — a cavity too large for a filling or crown, where removal prevents spread to nearby teeth
  • Impacted teeth — especially molars or wisdom teeth stuck under the gums or growing the wrong direction
  • Orthodontic treatment — creating space so braces can align the teeth
  • Stubborn baby teeth that won’t fall out and are blocking permanent teeth
  • Infections or abscesses in the root, where extraction stops the spread

What to Expect

  • 1. Gentle evaluation — exam and X-rays, a clear explanation, and an honest conversation about whether extraction is right
  • 2. Comfort first — local anesthesia numbs the area completely; nitrous oxide is available for especially nervous kids
  • 3. Quick, gentle removal — specialized tools; if the tooth is impacted or hasn’t erupted, a small incision may be needed
  • 4. Caring for the area — gauze, easy aftercare instructions, and a team that’s a phone call away once you’re home

Helping Your Child Heal

  • Bite gently on gauze for 15–20 minutes so a clot forms
  • No straws and no spitting — suction can dislodge the clot
  • Soft foods (yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes) for the first few days
  • Water over sugary or fizzy drinks until healed
  • Gentle saltwater rinses after 24 hours — no hard swishing
  • Watch for fever, increasing pain, or swelling that isn’t improving — call us right away

Preparing Your Child

  • Keep it simple: “the dentist will help the tooth come out so your mouth stays healthy”
  • Explain the numbing — no pain, just pressure or a funny feeling
  • Bring a comfort item — a toy, blanket, or stuffed animal
  • Stay positive — your calm is contagious
